Do you need a landing page or a full product?
People ask us this a lot: should we build a landing page or a full product?
The honest answer: it depends on what you are trying to prove or sell right now. Both are valid. They are not the same job.
When a landing page is enough
A landing page makes sense when you have one main goal and you can explain it on a single scroll.
Good fits:
- You are launching something new and need a clear offer on the web
- You want signups, waitlist entries, or contact requests
- You run ads or social traffic to one URL and measure one action
- You need proof (screenshots, a short demo video, testimonials) before a bigger build
A solid landing page has a clear headline, who it is for, what they get, social proof if you have it, and one primary button. That is it. No login, no dashboard, no admin panel.
When you need more than a page
You are probably past landing-page territory if you need any of this:
- User accounts and saved data
- Payments, subscriptions, or in-app purchases
- A backend that changes over time (inventory, bookings, content management)
- Different roles (customer vs admin vs staff)
- Integrations that have to stay in sync (CRM, email tools, APIs)
That is product work. It can still start small, but it is not a one-page project.
Questions to ask before you brief anyone
- What should a visitor do in the next 60 seconds? If the answer is "email us" or "join the list," a page may be enough.
- Does anything need to be stored per user? If yes, plan for a product.
- Who updates content after launch? A page you never touch is cheap. A product you change every week needs a real setup.
- What does success look like in 90 days? Match the build to that, not to what a competitor shipped.
Common mistake
Building a full app when a sharp page would have tested the idea in two weeks. The reverse happens too: a pretty page with no plan for what happens after someone clicks "Get started."
If you are unsure, start with the smallest thing that answers a real question from your audience. You can always grow into a product once you know people want it.
