Stills or motion: what to shoot first

Film projector light through haze

People who are about to launch often ask whether they should invest in photo or video first. Both can support a launch. The right order depends on what you need in the next few weeks, not what looks coolest on a mood board.

Start with stills when

You need assets fast for a website, pitch deck, app store, or ads that use static frames.

The product is physical or UI-heavy and one strong frame tells the story.

Your audience will mostly scan (social feeds, listings, slides).

You are testing positioning before committing to a longer production.

Good photography gives you flexibility: crop for different ratios, use in print, pair with copy. One shoot can produce dozens of usable files.

Start with motion when

The product is experiential (how it moves, sounds, feels over time).

You are running video-first platforms (TikTok, Reels, YouTube pre-roll).

You need a demo that shows steps: open app, save a pin, checkout flow.

Brand trust comes from seeing real people, real spaces, real process.

Video costs more in planning, shoot day, and edit. It pays off when movement or time is part of the message.

You can do both, but sequence matters

Many teams shoot stills and b-roll on the same day to save location and talent costs. That works when the brief covers both deliverables upfront.

Grabbing "a few photos" while the video crew works without a photo shot list usually means mediocre stills.

If budget forces a choice, pick the format that matches your next launch channel.

Repurpose thoughtfully

A video frame can become a still in a pinch. It rarely replaces a proper photo session for print or crisp product detail.

Clips cut from a long edit can fuel social. Plan aspect ratios early so you are not re-framing faces in post.

Bottom line

Stills first if you need breadth and speed. Motion first if the story is action and emotion over time. Many roadmaps use strong photography at launch, then add video for campaigns once the offer is proven.

We shoot both depending on the job. Talk through your timeline on our media production page or reach out.
